The Daily Telegraph hade en notis om hur utbildningen ska förbättras i Storbritannien (8 juni 2009). Under rubriken ”Pupils will learn to argue for new ’thinking’ GCSE” skriver DT så här:
Teenagers will be awarded the equivalent of a GCSE in ”thinking” under new plans. They will be taught the difference between an argument and a rant and how to separate fact from opinion.
Topics covered in the new course – drawn up by OCR, one of Britain’s biggest exam boards – will include debates over the existence of UFOs and arguments for and against euthanasia. The ”Thinking and Reasoning Skills” qualification will be offered next year, following claims from universities and employers that young people lack basic skills.
The Confederation of British Industry said an obsession with mobile phones and the internet left many teenagers unable to hold proper conversations and write essays. OCR said there was demand from schools for the new course.
But critics say the focus on skills-based coursed detracts from traditional subjects.
Motsvarande initiativ är välkommet också hos oss! Jag är inte säker på att argumentet att en sådan kurs skulle ta värdefull tid från andra ämnen väger särskilt tungt. Att lära sig argumentera stärker indirekt förmågan att hantera olika slags information på ett mera effektivt sätt. Man lär sig t.ex. snabbare och mera exakt att se vilken ståndpunkten är i en text och vilka argument som anförs som stöd för denna ståndpunkt. Denna färdighet är nyttig i många sammanhang, inte minst i skolan.
